Akwaaba! (Welcome!) My name is Amoah Daniel from Ghana, I am second-year Master’s student in the Frontier Medical Science program. I’ve being in Japan for a little over 2 years and I still remember stepping off my late-night flight into Tokyo’s cool air and seeing a university representative waiting just for me. Within an hour I’d checked into my university-arranged hotel, and even jet-lagged, I couldn’t resist edge to try a Japanese food. The first bowl was a Japanese ramen, its fragrant steam and gentle warmth, felt like a quiet welcome home.
アクワバ！（ようこそ！）こんにちは、ガーナ出身のアモア・ダニエルです。フロンティア医科学専攻の修士2年生として日本で学んでいます。日本に来てから2年以上が経ちますが、深夜便で東京に到着し、ひんやりとした夜の空気の中、大学の担当者の方が迎えに来てくださっていたあの瞬間を今でもはっきりと覚えています。1時間もしないうちに大学が手配してくれたホテルにチェックインし、時差ボケにもかかわらず、日本食を試してみたい気持ちを抑えられませんでした。初めて食べたのは日本のラーメンで、立ちのぼる香りと優しい温かさに、「ここが自分の新しい居場所なんだ」と静かに感じたのを覚えています。

Cultural Adaptation & Community Spirit
Back in Ghana I’d offer a handshake or hug, so I nearly reached out when I first met a lab member, then I remembered to bow instead. Beyond etiquette, we thrive in a culturally inclusive campus life, balancing academics with colourful festivals and exhibitions, homestay, volunteer activities and fun weekend adventures. I have also discovered that Japan’s quiet culture still overflows with joy and happiness: you can take a relaxing midnight train, cheer at a matsuri, or sing karaoke behind closed doors. On campus, joining the Association of African Students and our close-knit Ghanaian community has given me instant friends and a strong support network.
文化への適応とコミュニティの絆
ガーナでは初対面の人に握手やハグをするのが普通なので、研究室のメンバーと初めて会ったとき、思わず手を差し出しそうになりましたが、「ここは日本だ」と思い出して、慌ててお辞儀をしました。マナーだけでなく、筑波大学のキャンパスライフは文化的に多様で、勉強だけでなく、華やかな祭りや展示会、ホームステイ、ボランティア活動、週末の楽しいお出かけなどを通じて、さまざまな経験を楽しむことができます。
また、日本の静かな文化の中にも喜びや幸せがあふれていることを発見しました。深夜の電車に揺られてリラックスしたり、お祭りで声をあげて応援したり、カラオケボックスで思いきり歌ったりと、自分らしい楽しみ方がたくさんあります。キャンパスでは、アフリカ学生協会やガーナ人コミュニティに参加したことで、すぐに仲間ができ、心強い支えを得ることができました。

Life Beyond the Lab
The academic calendar mixes rigorous coursework with scheduled breaks for field trips, cultural festivals, and international events. On weekends, I lace up for dawn runs under towering ginkgo trees, challenge friends on the soccer field, and unwind in the Central Gymnasium. Whenever I crave the buzz of big-city life, Tokyo is just 45 minutes away—perfect for spontaneous weekend escapes without missing the green, affordable charm of Tsukuba. Here are a few snapshots of my favourite moments on campus and beyond.
