マラウイ共和国Kamuzu大学と協定更新に向けてディスカッション- Discussion Toward Renewal of Agreement with Kamuzu University of Health Sciences, Malawi
2025年7月23日、筑波大学医学インターナショナルオフィスでは、マラウイ共和国 🇲🇼 Kamuzu University of Health Sciences（KUHeS：カムズ大学）から2名の教授をお招きし、今後の協定について話し合いを行いました。
On July 23, 2025, University of Tsukuba, International Office for Institute of Medicine welcomed two professors from the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) 🇲🇼, Malawi, for discussions on the renewal of our academic agreement.
会談には、医学国際連携委員長のHo Kiong准教授をはじめ、市川政雄教授（公衆衛生）、我妻ゆき子教授（国際協力・公衆衛生）らが出席。KUHeSからは、Prof. Fanuel Lampiao（副学長補佐）、Prof. Adamson Muula の両教授が参加しました。
The meeting was attended by Associate Professor Ho Kiong, Chair of the Committee on International Collaboration in Institute of Medicine, along with Professor Masao Ichikawa (Public Health) and Professor Yukiko Wagatsuma (International Cooperation / Public Health). From KUHeS, Prof. Fanuel Lampiao ( PA for Vice-chanceller) and Prof. Adamson Muula participated.
我妻教授はアフリカで10年にわたる豊富な経験を持ち、世界で多くの人々に被害を及ぼしている重要な疾患に対して、最もコスト効果効率の良く、かつ、人々に受け入れられる治療や予防の介入方法を見出し、その有効性を実証してゆくことを研究テーマとされています。そのご経験から現地の課題やリスク回避の観点で議論をリードされていました。市川教授もご自身のアジア各国での現場経験に触れながら、積極的に参加され、充実した意見交換となりました。
Professor Wagatsuma has over ten years of extensive experience in Africa. Her research focuses on identifying the most cost-effective and socially acceptable methods of treatment and prevention for major diseases that affect large populations worldwide, and on demonstrating their effectiveness. Drawing on this experience, she took the lead in discussions, particularly from the perspectives of local challenges and risk mitigation. Professor Ichikawa also contributed actively, bringing his field research experience in Asian countries to the table, which resulted in a highly engaging and fruitful exchange of ideas.
KUHeSは2019年にマラウイ大学から独立し、同国唯一の医学部として医療・保健分野を支える重要な拠点です。本学とはすでに国際交流協定を結んでおり、2025年11月の更新に向けて、今後は「筑波大学医学医療系とKUHeSの部局間協定」という形で新たな協定を検討することになりました。今回の訪問は、新学長のご意向により、直接関係者と顔を合わせる場として実現しました。
KUHeS became independent from the University of Malawi in 2019 and serves as the country’s only medical school, playing a vital role in supporting the fields of medicine and public health. Our university has already concluded an academic exchange agreement with KUHeS, and toward its renewal in November 2025, discussions have begun on establishing a new agreement in the form of a “Departmental Agreement between the Institute of Medicine, University of Tsukuba, and KUHeS.” This visit was realized at the initiative of the new Vice Chancellor, with the purpose of providing an opportunity for direct, face-to-face engagement with the stakeholders.
我妻教授は「KUHeSはマラウイ大学から医学医療系組織が分離して新しいスタートを切った大学です。これからさらに交流が盛んになることを期待しています。」と述べられました。
Professor Wagatsuma remarked, “KUHeS is a university that has made a fresh start after its medical and health-related faculties became independent from the University of Malawi. I sincerely hope that our exchanges will continue to grow even more active in the future.”
ちょっとしたこぼれ話🍵
会談後のお茶菓子には、最中（もなか）と冷たい抹茶入り緑茶をご用意。マラウイでもサツマイモは親しまれているそうですが、最中は初めてとのこと。ちなみに現地ではルイボスティーが定番だそうです。
A little side story 🍵
For refreshments after the meeting, we served monaka (a traditional Japanese sweet) along with chilled green tea blended with matcha. While sweet potatoes are also familiar and well-liked in Malawi, Drs. mentioned it was their first time trying monaka. Incidentally, in Malawi, rooibos tea is said to be the standard.
