2022, a Japanese-inspired garden was created within the Dominique Villars Botanical Garden of the University of Grenoble Alpes. The garden is located on the Health campus close to the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy. Designed as both a teaching and cultural space, this garden now plays an important role in university life, offering opportunities for education, research, and intercultural exchange. It also enhances the daily environment for students, staff, and visitors, including patients from the nearby hospital who come to enjoy its peaceful atmosphere.
2022年、グルノーブル・アルプ大学のドミニク・ヴィラール植物園内に、日本をテーマとした庭園が新たに整備されました。この庭園は医学部・薬学部に近いヘルスキャンパスに位置し、教育的かつ文化的空間として設計されています。現在では、教育・研究・異文化交流の場として大学生活に大きな役割を果たすとともに、学生や教職員、来訪者、さらには近隣病院の患者にとっても、心安らぐ環境を提供しています。

The garden gathers more than 120 Japanese plant species. A large part of them are medicinal plants used in Kampo traditional medicine and listed in the Japanese Pharmacopoeia, making the garden a unique resource for teaching pharmacognosy and ethnopharmacology. Alongside these, visitors will also discover horticultural varieties that showcase the most emblematic flowers of Japan—such as irises, hydrangea, and peonies—together with several sakura cherry trees, some generously donated by Japanese partners. Their blossoms each spring offer a powerful symbol of friendship and renewal. Three water basins and a traditional stone lantern complete the landscape, evoking the aesthetics of Japanese garden art.
この庭園には120種以上の日本の植物が集められています。その多くは、漢方医学で用いられ、日本薬局方にも収載されている薬用植物であり、薬用資源学や民族薬理学の教育にとって貴重な場となっています。また、菖蒲、紫陽花、牡丹といった日本を象徴する花々の園芸品種や、日本の協力者から寄贈された数本の桜も植えられています。春の開花は、友情と再生の象徴として訪れる人々を魅了しています。さらに、三つの水鉢と石灯籠が配置され、日本庭園の美意識を想起させる景観を形づくっています。

A central feature of this space is the exhibition Flowers of Japan, which presents twelve panels corresponding to the twelve months of the year. Each panel highlights plants that mark the Japanese seasonal calendar and explains their cultural, historical, and ethnobotanical importance. The exhibition can be explored directly in the garden, but it is also available online, where visitors may download the panels or view an animated video with commentary.
この空間の中心的な取り組みのひとつが「日本の花」展です。これは一年の十二か月に対応した十二枚のパネルで構成され、それぞれが日本の季節暦を彩る植物を紹介し、その文化的・歴史的・民族植物学的意義を解説しています。展示は庭園内で直接鑑賞できるほか、オンラインでも公開されており、パネルのダウンロードや解説付き動画の視聴も可能です。

All the content featuring flowers from Japan has been brought to life by the media department of the faculties of medicine and pharmacy in a series of animated podcasts. Japanese prints come to life under the commentary of manon paul traversaz explaining the links between plants, humanity and society.

Every year, the garden hosts a Matsuri—a festive day devoted to Japanese culture. Organized by the faculty of pharmacy with the botanical garden association, the University Language Center, the Consulate of Japan in Lyon, and other partners, this event has become a highlight for the university. It attracts a wide audience and offers a lively way to discover Japanese traditions, arts, and nature.
また、毎年この庭園では「祭り（Matsuri）」と呼ばれる日本文化の日が開催されています。薬学部、植物園協会、大学言語センター、在リヨン日本国総領事館などの協力によって企画され、このイベントは大学にとって重要な行事となりました。幅広い来訪者を集め、日本の伝統・芸術・自然に親しむ活気ある機会を提供しています。

We warmly welcome students, researchers, and colleagues from the University of Tsukuba to visit us in Grenoble. Guided tours of the Japanese garden can be arranged with Dr. Manon Paul-Traversaz, director of the Dominique Villars Botanical Garden, who will be happy to share the story and spirit of this place. She knows Japan well and studied Japanese Kampo medicinal plants as part of a joint French-Japanese thesis (in Yokohama). She now teaches at the Faculty of Pharmacology and is attached to the LECA Alpine Ecology Laboratory.

The Japanese garden under the snow in winter 2024. It may be cold at Grenoble Alpes University, but the plants are holding up rather well thanks to the good care of the people looking after them.
