Frontiers of Medical & Life Sciences ~International Student Presentations of Medical and Life Sciences~

DOJO

Have you ever joined the University of Tsukuba “Medical International Student Presentations of Medical and Life Sciences”? Before TGSW and the Tsukuba Conference grew into the major international events they are today, this session was where University of Tsukuba medical students first learned to present on the international stage—almost like a training ground for their global debut.DOJO

〈Our Story〉
Our journey began in 2010 with the very first “Leading Graduate School International Conference”.From 2013 to 2018, the event became part of “Tsukuba Global Science Week (TGSW)”, a university-wide international conference hosted by the University of Tsukuba. What started as a student presentation meeting continues to serve as the “backbone” of this conference — the spirit of student challenge and growth still runs through it today. Since 2019, the event has also been linked with the “Tsukuba Conference“. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, it has never skipped a year. And in 2025, we proudly celebrate our 16th meeting.

What are now major international conferences all started with one small but brave step — this student presentation meeting. One presentation at a time, one year at a time, that spirit kept growing. And today, it lives on as something much bigger — a community that continues to expand and inspire.

Opening>
Kicking off October 2 was an inspiring opening address by Professor Takeshi Sakurai. A leading researcher at the International Institute for Integrative Sleep Medicine (IIIS), Professor Sakurai is known for his groundbreaking and even sensational research on the mechanisms of hibernation — work that has drawn attention across many fields. We were truly honored to begin the event with his remarks.

And then, this moment. ↑ In the photo above, you can spot the word “odachigusa” projected behind Professor Sakurai — coincidentally the name of this year’s leader, Associate Professor Chigusa Oda. A perfect accidental snapshot that set a wonderfully positive tone from day one.

〈Day 1〉
This year, we were excited to welcome four students from National Taiwan University (NTU).
The room was filled with a new level of energy, and one by one, the presenters delivered their talks — calm, focused, and powerful. All around the room, you could see students nodding as if to say, “Ah, I see, that makes sense,” sharing small moments of discovery together. The Q&A sessions were just as impressive. It sometimes felt like a friendly intellectual showdown, with everyone eager to test their ideas. And yet, at the same time, there was a strong sense of teamwork — a shared desire not just to compete, but to grow together.

And perhaps the ones who truly had no chance to relax were the judges. While the students brought passion and excitement, the judges brought a different kind of heat. Their eyes were locked on the slides, their ears tuned to every word — no detail escaped them. If concentration were a sport, they would definitely be medal contenders. The room carried that special kind of tension — the good kind — where everyone knows something important is happening.

And with that, Day 1 came to a smooth and successful close.

Day 2
On October 3, Day 2 continued with one passionate presentation after another, the momentum never slowing down. Held in a hybrid format, the event welcomed participants from overseas as well. It was one of those moments that makes you realize how small the world has become — we were all connected in real time, across borders and time zones.

The poster session also entered its second day, and as always, the venue was buzzing with questions. This is truly one of the most energetic scenes of the entire meeting. The moment you stepped into the space, you could almost feel your energy tank filling up. The judges, too, looked completely focused. Their sincere engagement with each presenter only amplified the excitement in the room, raising the atmosphere to yet another level.

A Little Coffee Break:
The aroma of coffee drifting through the hallway once again worked its magic this year — a perfect little “brain reset” between sessions. After all, no great conference runs without that essential cup.

And then came the main event — the announcement of the award winners. From among so many outstanding presentations, nine students were selected after careful review: five from the oral sessions and four from the poster sessions.

〈Award Ceremony〉
At the ceremony, Professor Kazuya Morikawa, Chair, “Doctoral program in Medical Sciences“, personally presented certificates to each award recipient. One awardee joined online from the University of São Paulo and received the Excellence Award. Seeing their bright smile projected onto the screen was a powerful moment — a true example of how we can now share joy across distances.

And to close the event, everyone gathered for a group photo

Organizing Faculty Team
Led by Associate Professor Chigusa Oda, our team (from left to right) included Associate Professor Aya Shiba, Assistant Professor Yuki Saito, Associate Professor Chigusa Oda, Ms. Mizuho Cohen from the International Office, Associate Professor Yuji Funakoshi, and in the front, Assistant Professor Kazumasa Horie. With calm coordination, great teamwork, and plenty of smiles along the way, we were able to run the event smoothly — and above all, make it an enjoyable and memorable experience for everyone involved.
