インドネシアふしぎ発見記（鈴木颯）Mystery Discovery in Indonesia!– by Hayate Suzuki
実験動物学研究室助教の鈴木颯です。2026年2月22日から3月1日までの8日間、インドネシアで行われたワークショップ&シンポジウムに参加するため、バンドンという都市に行ってきました。医学からは3名の学生を引率し、パジャジャラン大学で講義をしました。私にとって今回が初めてのインドネシア訪問でした。インドネシアといえば暑い国というイメージを持っていましたが、バンドンはバリやジャカルタと比べて標高が高く、どこか軽井沢のような涼しさを感じる場所でした。そんなバンドンでの体験を二つご紹介します。
Hello, I’m Hayate Suzuki, an assistant professor in Laboratory Animal Science. From February 22 to March 1, 2026, I spent eight days in Indonesia to participate in a workshop and symposium held in Bandung.This was my first visit to Indonesia. Before the trip, I had an impression that Indonesia is very hot. However, because Bandung is at a higher altitude than Bali and Jakarta,it has a comfortable climate like Karuizawa in Japan. Here, I would like to introduce two memorable experiences in Bandung.

💡一つ目は訪問診療の体験です。現地の医学部一年生とともに糖尿病の患者さんのお宅を訪れ、問診や血圧測定などの簡単な検査を行いました。会話はインドネシア語だったため詳しい内容までは分かりませんでしたが、患者さんは学生たちとの会話を楽しんでいる様子でした。
The first experience is participating in home medical care. Together with first-year medical students from a local university, we visited the home of a patient with diabetes and conducted a brief medical interview and simple examinations such as measuring blood pressure. I could not understand Indonesian, but the patient seemed to enjoy talking with the students.
一方で、学生たちは患者さんに病院の受診を勧めていましたが、患者さんは交通手段がなく、病院へ行くのが難しいとのことでした。バンドンの電車網は十分とは言えず、車も一般的ではありません。主な移動手段はモーターバイクですが、体調の優れない高齢者にとっては容易ではないと思います。最終的には兄弟の車で通院できるかもしれないとのことでしたが、この問題は決して一人の患者さんだけのものではないように感じました。日本でも地域によっては似た課題があるのかもしれず、学生だけでなく教員にとっても考えさせられる出来事でした。
At that time, students encouraged the patient to visit a hospital. However, the patient explained that it was difficult to go because there was no means of transportation. The train in Bandung is not extensive, and cars are not common. Motorbikes are the main means of transportation, but these are not easy for elderly people with poor health. In the end, it seems that the patient is able to visit the hospital in sibling’s car. I think this issue is not limited to this patient. Similar challenges may exist in some regions of Japan as well. This experience was thought-provoking not only for students but also for faculties.

Home medical care. One UT medical sciences student and I joined a team of four local students and one faculty member.
💡二つ目はアンクルンの演奏体験です。アンクルンは竹で作られたインドネシアの伝統楽器で、振ることで音が出ます。竹の長さによって音が決まっており、一つの楽器では一音しか出ないため、多くの人が協力して演奏します。
The second experience is playing the angklung. The angklung is a traditional Indonesian instrument made of bamboo, which produces sound when shaken. The musical scale depends on the length of the bamboo, and each instrument produces only a single scale. Therefore, many people cooperate to perform music.
大人や子どもたちの演奏を楽しんだ後、観客にもアンクルンが配られ、皆で合奏する機会がありました。観客は日本（筑波大学）だけでなく、韓国やアメリカなどさまざまな国から来ていました。国も年齢も性別も異なる初対面の人たちが、一つの曲を一緒に演奏します。演奏が終わったとき、会場には何とも言えない一体感が生まれ、まさに「ふしぎ」で幸せな気持ちになりました。
After enjoying performances by adults and children players, the audience were given an angklung and performed several pieces of music. The audience included people not only from Japan (University of Tsukuba) but also from various countries such as Korea and the United States. People of different nationalities, ages, and genders played the same piece of music together. When the performance ended, I felt a nice atmosphere.

Photo of angklung. Playing was more difficult than it looked. Because I concentrated so much during the performance, I fell asleep soon after returning to the hotel that day.

The audience danced together. Everyone seemed to be having a great time.
きっとバンドンには、つくばとは違う「ふしぎ」がまだまだあるのだと思います。また機会があれば、ぜひ訪れてみたいと思います。
I’m sure there are still many “mysteries” in Bandung that are different from those in Tsukuba. If I have the chance, I would like to visit again.
