SRP Plus 2025:Wrapping Up a Wonderful Program

This year’s SRP Plus (Summer Research Program Plus 2025) was held in winter ⛄️ instead of summer, due to the transition to a new management system associated with the introduction of the JV-Campus online platform.

More than 300 students from around the world applied for and participated in SRP Online 2025 (JV-Campus), which was held in September 2025. Following a highly competitive selection process, a total of 18 outstanding students were invited to join the SRP Plus program at the Tsukuba campus.

The invited students arrived in Tsukuba in January 2026 — right in the middle of winter (*SRP is usually held during the summer season). Coming from warmer countries and regions such as Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, and Brazil, many of the students experienced the cold Tsukuba winter for the first time.
However, after checking into the cozy and welcoming Global Guest House on campus, everyone seemed relieved and quickly settled into their new environment.

The next morning marked the first day of the program. After attending the orientation session together with the Teaching Assistants (TAs), each student was guided to their assigned laboratory by their lab TA.
There, they met their new lab mates, and their 18-day journey of research, learning, and collaboration officially began.

<Beginning Research in Each Laboratory>
The students fully immersed themselves in experiments and research activities every day throughout the program. Many of them were especially fascinated by the different tools, equipment, and research environment in Japan. Even something as simple as using a pipette seemed to leave a lasting impression, as they experienced differences in quality, precision, and feel compared with those in their home countries.

We are truly grateful to all the professors and laboratories who warmly welcomed and supported the students during their research experience.

While the students devoted themselves to research during the day, another special part of SRP Plus was the time spent sharing meals and conversations with friends from around the world.
Tsukuba, known as a student city, offers a wide variety of affordable and hearty international restaurants. From cozy Japanese diners to spice-filled ethnic cuisine, there was always something new to enjoy after a long day in the lab. After hours of intense research and experiments, gathering around delicious food became the perfect way to relax, recharge, and deepen friendships.

Tsukuba Proton Beam Therapy Center
We also had the opportunity to visit our proudly newly established Proton Therapy Center, a state-of-the-art facility where advanced cancer treatments are carried out with remarkable precision every day.
We were fortunate to be given a special tour inside the center. What left the strongest impression on us was the thoughtful care shown toward pediatric patients.
Throughout the facility, “Disney magic” featuring Mickey and friends could be found in many places, helping to ease the fear, anxiety, and stress that children may feel before treatment.
Beyond its cutting-edge medical technology, the center beautifully reflected a patient-centered approach, with warm and compassionate touches designed to support both children and their families. It was truly a memorable and inspiring visit.

On the weekends, the students also took part in field trips to experience Japanese culture and local attractions. They enjoyed the beautiful nature of Mt. Tsukuba, one of Ibaraki’s most famous landmarks, explored the seaside atmosphere and lively fish market in Oarai, and even tried traditional pottery making in Kasama. Smiles could be seen everywhere throughout the trips. Experiencing Japanese culture firsthand is also an important part of the SRP Plus program, providing students with opportunities to connect with Japan beyond the laboratory.

The pottery pieces created by the students during the ceramic workshop in Kasama have finally been completed — and the results are amazing! Each piece reflects the students’ creativity and individuality, making them wonderful memories of their cultural experience in Japan. The finished works turned out beautifully!

As a special cultural event, we also held a traditional Japanese tea ceremony in the Omotesenke style, hosted by Ms. Tarara Shinkai. The students carefully observed the graceful tea ceremony performance, experiencing the beauty of Japanese hospitality and tradition firsthand. One student from India was especially fascinated by the ceremony and watched every movement with deep concentration. She shared that the spirit and mindfulness of the tea ceremony reminded her of yoga, and seemed deeply moved by the experience.

Finally, the research presentation session on the last day of the program arrived. From the very morning, the students wore serious and focused expressions as they prepared for their presentations. Each participant presented their research sincerely and passionately, and the sessions were filled with lively discussions and thoughtful questions from both students and faculty members. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to reflect on how much they had learned and accomplished during the program.

After completing their research presentations, the students received their certificates of completion, followed by a group photo to celebrate the occasion.
The photo captured not only a great sense of achievement, but also the joy and relief that came after successfully finishing the program together.
